We installed a free solar electric system, yes that's right, free! The total install was over $ 100,000 but we paid nothing. So how many of you would love to install a free solar energy system, but the cost has been holding you back? Did I say free? Yes, there is no cost, but how does that work?

As we evaluated installing and buying a solar energy system, the break even cost was always over 10 years. The reps that come out will show you documents reflecting a 4-6 year break even which is not even close. They use the value of SREC's, which is a credit system with a floating value. As more solar electric energy comes on line the value of the SREC's will decrease lengthening your break even cost. So buying the system was not making any sense, but with the estimated costs of electric doubling over the next 10 years, we knew we had to do something.

Free Solar Energy-The Power Of The Lease

We looked into solar leasing. You need the last 12 months of your electric bills. You are allowed by regulations to install solar electric systems up to the amount you use in electric. If you averaged 2000 kw per month, you could install a solar system that generated 24000 kw per year. A representative will do an evaluation to see if a solar system can be installed on your property. There are 2 major issues to be resolved, trees creating shade, and a south east exposure.

In our case, our total usage was 30,000 kw but our roof could only fit 20,000 kw. We will not completely replace our electric bill, but the solar system will take care of 2 / 3rd of our old bill. Not bad, but what is the cost of the free solar energy system? Nothing up front or out of pocket. We pay a set fee per kw that the solar energy company guarantees it will generate, which is roughly half of the electric companies total rate. That rate is locked in for 15 years. Imagine that, no price increases for 15 years!

So is the free solar electric system really free? Yes and no. As stated, there is no upfront cost and we paid nothing for the $ 100,000 plus solar system that was installed. We only pay for the guaranteed energy that is produced, which is 50% less than current rates with a price lock for 15 years.

With a 15 year guaranteed rate we have total protection against inflation and the estimated 100% increase in electric rates in the next 10 years. That is huge! Talk to anyone, and ask what their electric bill was 10 years ago compared to today, pretty eye opening. So who maintains the system? The solar company is responsible for all maintenance and insuring the system is operating to top efficiency.

Basics and precautions

Before choosing and installing proper attic insulation, there are some things to consider and some precedcies that must be taken into account. First off all, you must understand some potential problems that could occur in this type of insulation and some basic ways to prevent and overcome such problems. Finally, depending on the insulation types, always make sure to take some precautions when working with these materials, such as using appropriate protective equipment, like gloves, protective suits or goggles, make sure that your skin is adequately covered and protected, always work in a well ventilated space, try keeping the loft hatch closed when performing the work and make sure to properly dispose of any insulation waste.

Loft insulation types

Blanket insulation

One of them is using batt or blanket insulation, which includes the use of mineral fiber, that is rock, glass or sheep wool fiber insulation, which is the most commonly used material. The basic advantage of this loft insulation type is that it is basically a DIY job and is specifically suitable for accessible spaces insulation. On the other hand, make sure to take the previously mentioned precautions, since some materials can cause skin irritations and bear in mind that these insulation materials can be to bulky and not always suitable for insulating small and tight places. Their basic advantage is that the use of available wood boards is a more eco-friendly solution, they are especially applicable in loft conversions and have substantial performance, but can be more expensive than the alternatives. This type of material is placed between the roof rafters, but always leaving some space between insulation and roof tiles in order of providing needed ventilation and thus avoiding condensation.

Loose-fill and blown-fiber materials

Finally, loose-fill and blown-fiber insulation are based on the use of lightweight materials like mineral wool, cellulose fiber or cork granules, which could be good solution when adding insulation to the existing attic one or in severely accessible spaces but with a risk of coming loose when there is draft. It is not a DIY job, but should be handled by certified professionals. I recently purchased three LED (Light Emitting Diode) lamps for the recessed cans in our kitchen ceiling. There were some minor complications in that they are shorter than CFLs (Compact Fluorescent Light) or incandescents, but I solved this with socket extenders. There's also the complication of being more expensive but I'm confident they will pay for themselves within a reasonable amount of time.

The reason I'm so happy with them is the quality of the light they put out compared to CFLs. The light is much better but without the glare, and the difference is clearly discernible is terms of being able to see. The LED has 1050 lumens and the CFL has 1040 lumens so you would not think there would be much difference. But it really is quite significant as the LED is noticeably brighter. (A lumen is a measure of light output per watt.)

LEDs last much longer than CFLs; at least twice as long based on manufacturer's claims. Of course the manufacturers also claimed that CFLs would last about fuve seven years. The problem with CFLs is that they're meant for use in situations where they will be left on for extended periods of time. CFLs are not ideal for lights that are frequently turned off and on as people come and go in to the room. CFLs also take a long time to reach full brightness and they produce significant glare.

The life expectancy of my LEDs is about 30 years. Our CFLs typically last no more than two years before they burn out. They're supposed to last six or more so we're not getting even close to their projected life expectancy. I'm not an engineer but it seems to me that the design of the LED is much simpler than the CFL, which leads me to believe that is the difference.

The color temperature of both bulbs is the same at 2700 Kelvin. But the LED uses half the amount of electricity at 12 watts compared to 26 for the CFL, and the quality of light from the LED is substantially better. Not only is the quality of light better, but they also last longer (30 years compared to 5.5) and there are no hazardous materials used in the manufacture of the LED. They are more expensive at $ 24 / bulb (not including shipping) but the savings are significant enough to justify the extra cost.

I recently broke a CFL bulb and it was royal pain cleaning it up not to mention the potential for mercury poisoning. This is what really pushed things over the edge for me personally. No matter how careful you are when handling a light bulb there is always the possibility it will slip out of your hand. LEDs are much more durable because they have an aluminum body.

Clean up after breaking a CFL is a much more involved process. You have to air out the house, vacuum up the glass and dispose of the vacuum bag. You can not use your heater or a / c for several hours while you air out the house. Airing out the house in the winter is not very energy-efficient either.

Both bulbs were manufactured in China so unfortunately there is no patriotic benefit associated with either of them. (I intentionally did not include the brand of the LED but feel free to contact me if I would like more information.) I'm almost hiring my remaining incandescents will burn out faster, because I want to replace them. LEDs are more expensive, but for my money they're a worth investment.
